Mitral Valve Disease (MVD) also known as a Heart Murmur, is the number one killer of Cavaliers. Tiki Club encouargae breeders to work towards breeding healthier Cavaliers by neing vigilant with heart testing and avoiding breeding from young dogs or dogs with early onset MVD.

Breeding Protocols & Mitral Valve Disease

Any dog or bitch being considered to be bred from should preferably be 2 1/2 years of age and have an up to date clear heart certificate, ie having been tested and certified clear of MVD within the previous 12 months.

Both parents of the dog or bitch to be bred from should be at least 5 years of age and also have a current clear heart certificate.

Using an older dog at stud with an MVD clear certificate issued as late in life as possible is most desireable. However the use also of an older stud dog with a low grade murmur that has developed late in life should not be disregarded.

See also Heart Clear List for a list of members Cavaliers for which current clear MVD certificates have been filed with the club.
